FORENSIC AND BIOLOGICAL ANTHROPOLOGY LABORATORY

The Forensic and Biological Anthropology Laboratory – FABaLAB was founded in 2016. The Head of the Laboratory is Željana Bašić, Associate Professor, while the Laboratory associates are Prof. Šimun Anđelinović, Ivana Kružić, Associate Professor, and Ivan Jerković, PhD.

The laboratory members have been curating the osteological collection that consists of more than 3,000 skeletons, from prehistory to World War II. Studies on this collection have been conducted continuously since 2009, and resulted in five doctoral theses, as well as numerous masters’ theses of the students from the University Department of Forensic Sciences but also from foreign universities (e.g., Penn State, University of New Haven – Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences).

In 2017., in collaboration with the Clinical Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology of University Hospital Center Split, the Laboratory also established the virtual osteological collection of MSCT images.

Laboratory activities include teaching, research, and professional activities.

The research-related activities include: continuous analysis of osteological material, analysis of ancient DNA, interdisciplinary analysis of material in cooperation with other institutions, osteological collection formation, database development, academic publications, organization and participation in scientific workshops and conferences, cooperation with the economy, leading and participating in scientific projects, monitoring the quality of research work, and undertaking all necessary activities to improve research productivity.

The professional activities include: analysis of osteological material on request, participation in excavations, 3D printing and models distribution, model construction, establishing cooperation with the economy, dissemination and application of the research results, promotion of the Laboratory to the public, promotion and design of science tourism activities, court expertise, organization and participation in activities that popularize science, support and participation in student and professional projects and other activities within the scope of the Laboratory.
