About the project
Forensic sciences are interdisciplinary sciences that include many areas and fields and unite them all at the service of legal process, thus adapting the terminology of other sciences to the legal system. The existence of analyzed and clearly defined terminology necessarily leads to higher quality and more efficient work of the justice system. The development of forensic scientific thought through scientific and professional work will undoubtedly influence the development of legal regulations and legal thought. In some disciplines of forensic science Croatian scientists are among the leading ones in the world, especially in the part that concerns issues from the Croatian Homeland War and the identification of victims from mass graves, as well as the prevention and detection of bioterrorism and mass biological-toxic effects.
The knowledge that has resulted in numerous publications and presentations at world meetings should be transferred to young forensic scientists so that they can use them in their scientific and professional work.
Research in forensic sciences, as well as teaching and the popularization of this science, are possible only if there is a scientific terminology that is standardized. and systematically analyzed. Developing a forensic and criminalistic terminology is even more important when it is taken into account that forensic sciences are in the direct service of the justice system, whose language and method of communication must be unambiguous, clear and standardised. The development of forensic sciences as an interdisciplinary science is exponential, and therefore, there is an exceptional need to standardize the terminology regarding the increasing number of terms and new methods. It is possible to follow these trends by using the English language, however, when it comes to writing and communicating in the Croatian language, we see many unresolved questions about terms and their meaning. Although there are some glossaries that include some fields of the criminalistic and forensic terminology, it is mostly not fully standardised, or it is not up to date. The standardisation of the existing terminology and the creation of new ones, especially by including new discoveries and areas of forensics, facilitates interdisciplinary research.
